Thai foreign minister says Cambodia should respect UNSC decision+

BANGKOK, Feb. 14 (AP) – (Kyodo)—Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya on Tuesday called on
Cambodia to comply with a U.N. Security Council statement urging the
two sides to resolve a border dispute through dialogue.

Kasit said in a phone-in interview with a Thai television station that
Thailand was ready to follow the council’s recommendations, made in a
statement issued Monday after the day’s closed-door meeting convened
at the request of Cambodia.

Kasit said it is now up to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen whether
talks take place with the Thai government led by Prime Minister
Anhisit Vejjajiva.

“We are ready to start the bilateral talks at all levels. I can even
talk to (Cambodian Foreign Minister) Hor Namhong tomorrow…Cambodia
should express sincerity to solve problems if they want peace,” Kasit

In its statement, the U.N. Security Council expressed “grave concern”
over recent armed clashes between Cambodian and Thai forces at the
border between the countries and called on both sides to establish a
“permanent” cease-fire.

The council members “called on the two sides to display maximum
restraint and avoid any action that may aggravate the situation,
according to the statement.

Cambodia and Thailand have been at loggerheads over their rival claims
to 4.6 square kilometers of land around a temple on the border.

Since the temple was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2008,
several rounds of border clashes have occurred.
