Yudhoyono sends FM to communicate with Thailand, Cambodia

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has sent Foreign Minister Marty
Natalegawa to Cambodia and Thailand to speak directly to the two
countries currently engaged in a border conflict.

“As we know,
Indonesia is ASEAN’s chair country. We have the moral responsibility to
be part of the solution,” Yudhoyono said Monday in Jakarta, as quoted
by Tempointeraktif.com.

Yudhoyono said that he had previously
been asked to provide suggestions for solving the conflict, adding that
he had met Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Cambodian
counterpart Hun Sen during the last dispute between the two countries.
“When
[I] engaged in separate meetings with the prime ministers, there had
been commitments to restraint. The unwanted incidents had been
preventable, but this time we witness that military clashes still
occur,” he said.

Yudhoyono added that he was placing considerable hope in Marty’s trip.

The
border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand flared up both Friday and
Saturday between troops stationed along the border. The incidents left
at least five people dead.
