Thai DPM Suthep Visits Thai-Cambodian Border Area

BANGKOK, Jan 12 (Bernama) — Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Suthep
Thaugsuban is paying a visit to Thailand’s northeastern Si Sa Ket
Province on Wednesday to inspect a reforestation project along the
Thai-Cambodian border in Kanthararak District, Thai News Agency (TNA)
reported.

Suthep, who oversees national security, said that his inspection
trip to the border area has nothing to do with border issues or
relations between Thailand and Cambodia, but it is aimed to look into
progress of the reafforestation project in honour of His Majesty King
Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The Democrat deputy premier, who was accompanied by Thai Army
Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, insisted that his visit to the border
area has also no linkage to a judicial inquiry on additional espionage
charges against two of seven Thai detainees in Phnom Penh–scheduled
for today.

The two detainees are Veera Somkwamkid, a leading activist of the
Thai Patriots Network aligned with the yellow-shirt People’s Alliance
for Democracy (PAD), and his secretary Ratree Pipatanapaiboon.

The deputy prime minister acknowledged that the Thai government
has assigned the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be its primary
organ to assist the seven Thai detainees in Cambodia, including a
Bangkok MP of the ruling Democrat Party, Panich Vikitsreth, who were
all charged with illegal entry and illegal trespass on a Cambodian
military zone.

A bail request was submitted by lawyers of the seven Thai
detainees to the Cambodian court yesterday and it will take about five
days for the Phnom Penh court to consider and decide on the request,
resulting in the seven Thai nationals’ continued stay in the Prey Sar
Prison in the Cambodian capital in the meantime.
