Funcinpec rejects Ranariddh’s offer of an olive branch while Nhiek Bunchhay is opposed to the prince’s return to politics

The royalist Funcinpec Party continues to reject Prince Ranariddh’s
call for the re-unification of the two splintered royalist parties
after he returned to politics and rejuvenated his moribund Norodom
Ranariddh Party (NRP) on 11th December.

After the NRP congress
confirm his nomination as its new president, Prince Ranariddh
immediately called for a re-unification and merger of the two parties
to form a new party called “Funcinpec 81” in honour of the birth date
of the Funcinpec Party which was formed by ex-King Sihanouk in 1981.

Keo
Put Rasmy, president of Funcinpec Party and Ranariddh’s brother-in-law,
initially supported the prince’s proposal but has since backed down on
his support of the idea. Mr. Nhiek Bunchhay (pictured), the powerful
Secretary General of Funcinpec Party and Ranariddh’s nemesis, however, immediately rejected the call and said that he is opposed to Prince Ranariddh’s return to politics. He has now reiterated his opposition.

Nhiek
Bunchhay said he is opposed to the creation of “Funcinpec 81” because
he thinks that it is like dissolving the entire Funcinpec Party and
create a brand new party. This is an unacceptable proposition to the
Funcinpec Party, he said.

Mr. Pen Sangha, spokesman for the NRP,
said Funcinpec must give some sort of a signal to the prince’s call to
enable to re-unification talk to proceed forward. He said the prince
will continue his efforts to re-unite the two royalist parties, despite
initial rejection from the Funcinpec leadership.
