Today, Cambodia has more than 80 universities and the number of students enrolled in the university courses have increased to nearly 200,000 students.

Mr. Pitt Chamnan, Secretary of Statement of Ministry of Education, recently said that the government have registered more than 80 universities and tertiary learning institutions. He said in 1997, Cambodia had only 9 tertiary institutions, but that has increased to more than 80 in 2010.

He added that in 1997, there were only 10,000 students
enrolled at Cambodian tertiary institutions, but that present
enrollments have increased to 161,561 in 2010. Most of these
enrollments are in private universities and institutes.

Cambodian tertiary learning institutions have increased dramatically in recent years, but students and observers have criticised them for the lack of teaching and academic quality.
