Long Beach Cambodian parade’s future will be discussed

LONG BEACHOrganizers of the annual Cambodian New Year parade are holding a community forum today to discuss the future of the event.

Sponsorship money has nose-dived in recent years and led to deficits that organizers say make it hard to continue.

“We’re looking for ways to reduce expenses and increase revenue,” said organizer Phylypo Tum.

“Basically this is just to get the community idea and their opinions,” said Steve Meng, another organizer.

Tum will give an overview of the parade’s finance troubles and options to reduce costs, such as shortening the parade route.

“Mainly, our funding and sponsorship is a lot lower,” Tum said.

“We had big drops in 2009 and (so far) in 2010.”

The meeting will be held in the community room at MacArthur Park, 1321 E. Anaheim St., from 6 to 8 p.m.
